Define Dry Socket
You might have gone to the dentist to get a tooth pulled. A portion or the complete bone within the socket may occasionally be exposed as a result of the extraction surgery. Without an epithelium or blood clot covering it, it can stay exposed for a very long time. Acute pain may result from this. This condition is referred to as dry socket or alveolar osteitis. It frequently occurs during molar extraction .
What causes dry socket or alveolar osteitis is still a mystery to researchers. These are a few potential causes.
Why Do You Get Dry Sockets?
Following are some potential reasons of dry socket:
Bacterial Contamination: After a tooth extraction, the blood clot may occasionally fail to form or disintegrate. By being exposed to bacterial infection, this area of the socket becomes more problematic .
Trauma at the Surgical Site: Alveolar osteitis is more likely to develop when the extraction site sustains trauma, particularly from a difficult extraction.
Blood clot Premature Dislodgement: Following the tooth extraction, a blood clot forms at the tooth’s root. If the clot is too big, this won’t have time to mend and fill up.
Home Remedies For Dry Socket
1. Warm Salt Water
Iodates, which are present in table salt, have antibacterial effects (4). By removing oral bacterial infection, this can lessen the likelihood that a dry socket would develop.
You Will Need
- 1 glass of warm water
- 2 teaspoons of salt
What You Have To Do
- Heat a glass (250 mL) of water.
- Add two teaspoons of salt to it.
- Rinse your mouth thoroughly with saline water.Repeat 2-3 times daily.
2. Cold And Warm Compress
Patients report jaw pain and edema following dental surgery. After surgery, applying a cold compress helps to minimize swelling and pain . To ease discomfort, you might try apply a hot compress close to the injured area.
You will require
an ice/heated compress
a water bowl
What You Should Do
For 15 minutes, apply an ice pack to the affected area.
A clean washcloth dipped in warm water can also be used. For ten to fifteen minutes, place the washcloth near your jaw.
Alternate compresses in the ratio of 1:3 (warm:cold) can also be used for 10 to 15 minutes. This will offer relief right away.
3. Clove Oil
Clove oil contains eugenol, which has antibacterial and analgesic effects . These characteristics might lessen discomfort and combat an infection brought on by a dry socket.
You will require
Clove oil, two or three drops, on a clean cotton ball
What You Should Do
Apply a few drops of clove oil on a fresh cotton ball.
For about 15 to 20 minutes, place the cotton ball close to the extraction site. Make sure not to apply clove oil to any regions that are not sore because it could cause a minor burning sensation.
You can also use whole dried cloves as an alternative. Chew on a clove slowly to release the oil into the vicinity of the injury. Before washing your mouth, chew on it for around 30 minutes.
